DR. ARUNA WADKAR–too positive to be doubtful, too optimistic to be fearful and too determined to be defeated.

Dr. Aruna Wadkar is a woman who overcame all odds to chase her dreams and change the world. Her story shows that reaching your dreams and goals is possible even when faced with challenges and adversity. She has defied the odds stacked against her and stood up against adversity to become a successful woman. She is an amazing woman, who has faced hardship head on and overcame the odds against her. Her circumstances could have kept her down but this inspirational women refused to give up. She rose to meet the rocky road ahead of her and persevered in the face of adversity. The hardships she and her children have faced have made her strong, her resilience has empowered her and herloving heart has pushed her further than she ever thought possible. She refused to let brute strength and male misogyny reduce her to meekly submit to a life of wretched misery. She rose above her horrible circumstances to become beacon of hope and admiration to other women. Dr. Aruna Wadkar is a woman who immediately comes to my mind when I try to define the will to survive, to succeed and to never, ever let one’s own self lose the will to live a life of purpose because of somebody else’s evil.

Tell us something about yourself…your journey….When, where, why and how did it all begin? What are the obstacles you faced and how did you overcome them?

I read this quotation somewhere and I strongly believe in it: A woman is like tea bag – you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water, Eleanor Roosevelt.

I consider myself fortunate as I was born and brought up in the disciplined, bold and courageous family environment of Indian Army. My maternal pedigree and my father faithfully served the Indian Army all throughout their lives. My family background turned me into a daring, courageous and disciplined female. I still remember the biggest challenge that I faced was within the brood where I was the eldest among the siblings. I was hardworking, focused and brilliant in my studies but with respect to looks I was always considered as the poorest of all the kids. I was continuously reminded of my not so attractive appearance through mocking and offensive comments. All this gradually developed an inferiority complex in me which extended till I reached Grade 12.

But step by step as I was growing I started realizing one thing that I was criticized and discouraged within my own family but when I stepped out of the house and interacted with people other than my family members they always appreciated me for all the talent and extrovert behavior. I could clearly feel there is a difference between how I was treated inside and outside my family bracket. But because of all the pressure that was developed and crystallized inferiority complex I flunked in my 12th Grade.

Like any other Indian female’s destiny mine was also decided by my parents and it was nothing else but “Marriage” But in the real sense it seems marriage was not my fate. Marriage never brought too much happiness and satisfaction for me. I had to give up all my studies and was cinched within the boundaries of family and household responsibilities. I was feeling incomplete and suffocated. There was something dying inside my every minute. Mental and physical abuse became the identity of my marital relationship. In order to live my life further the only option was to get over with marriage. I realized that I am ready to accept all the challenges of a spouseless and single parent life but will not continue further in a relationship that doesn’t respect my education, career, growth and independence. I was very clear that I never wanted to dwell inside the four walls of the dingy relationship by dismissing my own identity.

So finally, I decided and took a step ahead. When it was time to move out of my marriage and take a divorce. I was very clear that I’m not going to drag my kids to the embarrassing and disturbing environment of the legal proceedings and make their life awkward. I always wanted my kids to have a secured future so I suggested them to stay with their father as he was a government employee and can give them everything they deserve in life but they wished to stay with me. For the same reason without asking for any alimony I took both my kids and moved out.

Now when I look back I always feel I owe all the success and accomplishment to the most bizarre incident of my life which was my decision to move out of a suffocating marital relationship and live an independent life. I thank my stars that I went through all that. Had that incident not happened to me I would have not sensed this gratification, success and self-esteem that I now have. Sometimes when something bad is happening to us we curse our destiny for it but surely later we realize that all that bad happened for so much good. Thank goodness I went through all that

Being a single parent, my life became even more challenging as now I had to look for a job for myself and financial security for my kids. There came a time in my life where I stood clueless but I reminded myself I was a fighter, so I geared up all my energy and positivity and started looking for a job immediately.

The day I stepped out of the house life was full of twist and turns and I experienced all the possible challenges life had thrown at me. I was fortunate as I got the job of a Hindi Language Teacher. Well! I saw sunshine in my life after a long time as I flourished in my job. I was appreciated for my work and talent. But unfortunately all this didn’t last long as after five years of hard work I was asked to leave. All this happened because of the revamping of the school system wherein all teachers without any professional qualification were asked to quit.

I found myself again sailing through turbulent streams. No job, no money and unpredictable future. But the only thing that ignited the fire in me and kept the lamp burning, were my kids who were completely my responsibility.

First and foremost thing that I had to take up was a professional degree course and continue with my further studies and strengthen my foundation to improve my employability scope. Above all I never questioned my age when I decided to pursue my further studies. All I knew was I am a fighter and I had to move on.

Life was too taxing as being a single mother I was torn apart between the household responsibilities and occupational challenges. There was no time to breathe as I did various jobs in a single day. I was good at art and craft therefore I used my talent to create some nice piece of art to sell it and provide food to my kids. I did all this to keep my kids in a decent condition and went to college to gain professional strength. In order to save money, I avoided traveling in any public and private conveyance and mostly preferred to walk down long distances.

Finance had become major crises. No money to pay my B.Ed course fee and no money even to pay my kids’ school fee. I became completely clueless as there was no money even to pay house rent and had no idea what will happen if we are thrown out of the house. Then for the first time luck was with me where in I convinced my landlord and I was able to buy sometime to deposit the house rent. Another help came from the school where my kids use to study. Looking at the fantastic academic performance of my kids and the tough times I and my kids were experiencing the school authorities decided to wave off their one year fee. I could get the signals that destiny was considering my hard work. This thought gave me enough strength to move on.

Being a single parent managing work and life was not always easy. Doing various jobs in a day to feed the family was not a cake walk. Kids were too young to understand how things went south in their lives. All of a sudden they realized that they only have their mother to take care of them and she is autonomously managing to make ends meet. So, the first step I took to sort out things and to bring work life balance was to introduce independence in their lives. I started counseling them on how important it is for them take care of their things on their own. Most of the prime aspects of their lives like studies, administering their belongings, executing the to and fro movement, cooking, creating, handling was mostly taken care by their own selves. I slowly realized half of your work gets reduced and you get more time to concentrate on your work if your kids learn to become independent. But I always use to assure that whenever it was time to be in their school I was always there. Also I feel it’s wise enough to make kids independent with their studies but at the same time keep a track of what they are doing and how they are performing in various aspects of life.

Tough times continue but don’t remain static forever; therefore my life also started taking a turn again. I cleared my exams with distinction. Post the completion of my M.Ed degree I got a job as a Principal in a school immediately. Financial condition started improving. Now I wanted to uproot myself from Maharashtra and relocate to some other city as I never wanted to keep any strings attached with a place that made me see so much in life.

Once again I took a major step in my life and relocated from Maharashtra to the city of Bangalore in Karnataka. Post relocating to Bangalore I started working with HSBC. Initial one year was very challenging as I was not giving the required performance on my job profile. But later with the handhold of a wonderful Team Leader my performance flared up and I started doing amazing job. But of course I soon realized that corporate is not the place for me. There was money but no job satisfaction. I realized I only loved teaching. What else then, I had quit HSBC and started working as an academic co-coordinator with a very reputed school. There was a major reduction in my salary as I moved from corporate to academics. Still there was enough gratification just because it was academics. Soon I was promoted to the position of the school Principal.

Now there was no looking back as I went climbing the success ladder. My career graph kept fluctuating and lot of questions were raised on my job switching to which my clear answer was – Teaching for me is not mere a simple job or a direct route to earn money. Academics is my passion and I always make an effort to bring changes for betterment and love trying and testing new ways for improvement. I don’t want to stagnate myself by simply doing an academics job. Therefore any place that didn’t allow me to explore and experiment with a clear intention of betterment can never be my place of work. But I didn’t stop anywhere and magic started happening with recognition in the form of awards and speaker forums.

Name, fame, success, recognition and rewards stared following me. My last job was as a principal of an ICSE School in Bijapur from 2019-2020.

A lot of times in my career I had given free services to schools and did not charge anything for whatever I did. On other occasions I did the job well but I was not paid. A lot of times questions were raised on my way of executing my job as I tried to experiment and do new things in the field of academics which was not accepted by others as they saw it as a threat to their existence. But, come what may I never tried to demean any person or system and just concentrated on what I planned to do. There was nothing much powerful and bright than my self confidence

What kept you going all these years?

The only thing that kept my morale high during the tough times was my trust in the Almighty and a positive attitude towards life. Patience and persistence worked for me in those dark days when I was alone with two kids, no food, no money and no family support. I even realized that you should treat people the way you want them to treat you. Love and respect are two things everybody wants. Whatever job I took up I ensured that I kept everybody’s trust and never deceived or cheated anyone for my personal benefits.

Tell us more about your dream venture—HETS…

My dream of having my own venture completely focused on educational transformation came true with Harvest Educational Transformation Solutions in 2017. My sole idea behind the establishment of HETS was to combine Education and Technology for a bright future that is within every human’s reach.  I was managing it singe handed but the pandemic of 2020 turned out to be a boon for me as I started getting connected with numerous people who wanted to join hands with me in my venture. Thus, with efforts of people associated with me the first official launch of HETS was done in September 2020. The recent International Student Exchange Program conducted by HETS showed its magic when students all across the Globe came on a single platform for four days to exchange knowledge and learn.

Since the early years of my life I dreamt of serving the society in best possible way and now I’m happy to share that my dream is finally turning into reality with the emergence of HETS Foundation an NGO that came into existence on 8thMarch, 2021. The sole purpose of HETS Foundation is to work for the development and empowerment of all genders across the society, girl child safety and education, child development and protection, academic drop out education, parental education, education and skill development for all. The future intentions are to penetrate in the rural and deserted areas of the Country, reach out to as many people as possible and entrust them with education and skills. Provide them developmental backgrounds through academic classes, tutorials, training and workshops. Skill development will be one centric concern as the purpose is to make people skilled to an extent that they do not remain financially dependent on anyone. I plan to make people skilled and bring them on my platform to work with me.

I feel my people inclination; acts of kindness, respect, honesty and sincerity later paid me high dividends in the form of long term and trustworthy relationships. All those people I came into contact earlier are the ones who are still with me and want to walk further with me in fulfilling our common goals. The true picture of the same reflects in my dream project HETS where all my old and new contacts trusted my intentions and could easily visualize my vision. The HETS Team that started as a strong group sometime back new reflects the traits of a corporate structure where the team members feel committed towards their responsibilities, goals, time lines but never ask for anything in return. I’m happy to see how people trust me, work with me towards the common goals and wait patiently for rewards and returns that are yet to reach them.

In the initial stage of your career you can work as an “I” but as you move further and you get connected with people you’ll have to learn to become people oriented and start moving further with a perspective of “WE”. Success of people associated with you will make you successful in return and will even make you stronger.

What is the secret of your success?

I strongly believe there are no shortcuts to success. If you make any profession your passion then you should learn to have patience and be persistent. Always be ready for failures. I didn’t start my life with a six figure salary. It took me three decades to get to that position and I slogged myself every minute towards my goals.

In order to be successful it’s important to have dreams and work with others to fulfill those dreams. Now I don’t work for myself as now I work hard to get others introduced to success.

My future plans are absolutely dedicated to work with people and work for the people. I plan to make others experience success through my efforts.

Describe yourself as a person…

Few words that describe me easily are determined, persistent, goal directed and people oriented. I always feel its education, knowledge and skill orientation that can add value to any human being’s life. I strongly believe in adjustments and rectifications but no compromise when it comes to your growth and self worth. You just need to be focused, determined and clear on your thoughts – where you want to go in life.

Money was never my priority and no wonder me and my kids had to suffer lot of hardships as I valued honesty, hard work and relationships more than anything else in life. Being a people oriented person I love to be with others and work with others as I feel bigger goals and higher intentions can be easily met if people join hands with you and there is a common vision. I believe in giving enough freedom to people so that they get all the scope to express themselves and work with a free mind but at the same time the only thing I expect in return is honesty and dedication towards their own commitments. Believing in God and maintaining a clear perspective in life gives me all the strength. I am a highly decisive person and running the show alone doesn’t scare me at all. Working with a group I feel is not easy as you have to keep switching roles to maintain the energy, focus and decorum of the group. Therefore I guide, counsel, support, help, become strict and enraged all at the same time. My skills in academics, oration, convincing and presenting are my strengths. On the flip side sometime trusting people blindly has harmed me both personally and professionally.

I do not run after rewards and recognitions but I always feel, do a deed so good that rewards and recognition find you out in their unique ways.  Now I have reached a point in life where I want to work for others and help them see the brighter side of their lives.

As of now having less of family responsibilities I find it easy to maintain the work life balance. I make sure not only to dedicatedly work towards my goals in life but also devote enough time to self care. I maintain a work life balance thinking you can work and perform well in your professional life only if you feel happy and go for some self love.

All in all I feel it has just started and I have so much more to do.

What is the secret of your success?

The secret of success is not one single tip. The “secret of success,” if there is one, is that success is brought about by a combination of smart habits, a tenacious spirit, and a whole lot of luck. Making a few conscious changes to your behavior and attitude could prove to quite rewarding. Success in life has nothing to do with where you start. Sure, people who start advantageously in one area or another might have a leg up, but it has almost nothing to do with where they end up in life. Success transcends circumstances. The key to my success back then, lay more in the fact that I stuck to whatever I tried long enough for it to work

What is the one thing that keeps you going against all odds?

The courage and persistence to keep going on, past hurdles and obstacles, is powered by purpose. Ultimately, that’s what success means – to you, and to me.Your purpose. Discover it. Tap into it. Achieve it. Any endeavor driven and fueled by purpose cannot fail.

Keep fighting and don’t stop challenging yourself. There is no such thing as failure, unless we give up. It is only that we get defeated in different phases of life. Let this defeat be the fuel for your present as well as future endeavors. Life gets harder at every passing moment. So it is for everyone. There is no point in worrying. Forgiving others as well as oneself becomes really important. So live to the fullest. Self- belief is the key to face all the hardships. Remember, there should be no comparison at all. Just keep inspiring yourself with anything that makes you live more.

Pusha Karim–Facilitator of Little Founders for Change

There are lots of mothers who always wonderfully execute the role of a mother. Pusha Karim is one mother who inspires and motivates her daughters to grow without any barriers. She looks at life as a challenge and wholeheartedly intends to seize the day every day.

Tell us something about your life:

I am a mother, above all my previous designations, this is one title I wear with immense pride. I am the mother of two daughters Fariza, 11  years and Zehra 9 years old that are the center of my universe.

Originally I am from Bangladesh and I spent much of my childhood there until I moved to the US with my family. My education from high school until I received my Masters degree continued in the US. I later moved to Dubai with my husband Taimur. Eleven years ago Dubai became my home where we currently live with our two beautiful daughters.

My work experience prior to motherhood has made me incredibly diligent, determined and shaped me to be who I am today in terms of work ethic that translates into parenthood. But what truly defines me are the experiences of motherhood, values learned from the love and care of family, friends, and surroundings.

When, where, why and how did you begin your professional life. Tell us all about your journey.

I received my undergraduate degree in Biology and Masters in Public Administration in the US. I worked at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in research in Rheumatology first, followed by Biochemistry and Genetics. Despite the many years of work experience nothing makes me feel just as accomplished as I feel now to have the title of a mother.

What is the secret of your success and what does success mean to you?

To me success is not defined by a job title or a degree. It is defined by having true family values, having a compassionate heart and the willingness to give back to others with what you have. Giving back could mean, a kind gesture, a helping hand, providing a shoulder for others to cry on, or simply making someone’s day with a smile and a generous greeting, a simple wave of acknowledgement.

Any striking incident in your life that had a deep impact on you or changed the course of your life?

Several years ago, my daughters Fariza and Zehra first brought up an interesting idea. We used to travel to different countries during school holidays and my two daughters used to notice many less fortunate children on the streets who would always admire if Fariza and Zehra were holding a toy. It was a non verbal mode of communication that expressed the feeling of joy among children. They did not need to speak the same language to express their emotions.

My two daughters wanted to do something about it, to give back in their own way, and the one thing that they could do to bring smiles on the faces of others was to share their toys with them. So it began, our journey, a toy charity initiative called “Little Founders For Change” (http://littlefoundersforchange.com/) . Something that began as a small scale initiative soon picked up momentum through word of mouth, newspaper articles, a live TV show.

The idea behind the initiative is to collect gently used toys and take those to the underprivileged schools and orphanages across the globe and distribute toys among children to bring smiles in their faces. By making connections with organizations that serve others, our initiative also help to serve a larger community. We have shared toys with children in several countries, including Bangladesh, Dubai, Ethiopia, Pakistan and USA. This initiative in turn promotes recycling to keep toys away from landfills, something both Fariza and Zehra feel strongly about.

It’s an experience unlike any other that redefined the way I wanted to give back. The hands on experience shaped me in many ways. It helped me realize how simple it could be to improve the lives of others. I always wanted to work with those less fortunate and this gave me a whole new avenue. Although my children and other children across the globe are the main driving force behind the initiative, I help them through social media as they are still too young for it and help them with the toy distribution. Children are the primary members of this group and they are entirely in charge of disinfecting, counting and packaging the toys with adult supervision.

Describe yourself as a person.

I am a compassionate person and I strongly believe in the idea of giving back. The quality of life for me is defined not just through a paycheck, but by earning the quality time with family, creating memories. Whether it is through travel, or to simply relax over a cup of tea, the memories we create are the most treasured gifts in life.

My experiences along the way have solidified the essence of my belief in life and that is we all have a purpose to serve. Finding that gives us a powerful tool to get started now, at this very moment. Finding what you truly feel passionate for is the core of your being. The toy charity for instance, is an initiative that goes above and beyond material things. It shows that anyone at any age can make a difference, can initiate a wave of change, can bring smiles to others, through a kind gesture that is not limited to a common language or background. It creates unforgettable memories and the simple satisfaction of making someone’s day brighter.

What are the challenges you face

I think returning back to a work force when and if I do so will be the most challenging because stay at home moms do not always qualify for certain opportunities as the society in general defines us as lacking the much needed experience. Though technology has come a long way and I may be behind, I feel that the experiences of a stay at home mom can truly bring a different perspective into the job force.

How do you balance work and family

Whether I have a salaried desk job, or I work at home, it’s work. Its still a balance of how you allocate your time and the priorities you choose to dedicate most time to. Many stay at home moms have a guilt when they indulge in self care when that is the core of taking care of a family. Everyone must find ways to take care of themselves to be fully committed to their work, whether outside or at home.

What are your future plans?

I want to continue to be known as the mother of my two daughters. We would like to expand the toy charity initiative to other parts of the world and turn it into a non profit organization in the near future.

Anything else that you want to tell the readers.

Education is the key that opens up the door to many possibilities. But what you learn in the classroom also goes hand in hand with the real life experiences. In the end, how you choose to be known is not defined by a designation, but by the memories you leave behind, by the trail you help create, by the way you make room in other’s hearts.

We are the citizens of this world and we are responsible for shaping the future leaders, the future generations. The only way we can do it is by working together and supporting each other. We have the key to the future and our children are the ones that will define it. This itself is an immense responsibility and a blessing to treasure.

Share your experience about being a kid from a family of army men….

I am thankful for the ways army life shaped me, molded me, and made me who I am today. I learned how to be adaptable. From the beginning, I was a shy, quiet child. However, as I began to grow, I watched myself grow braver with each new address. I saw first-hand the incredible men and women serving our country.Being an army kid means you’re usually around other army families. This was very special to me because I saw them for who they were— not superheroes, but regular men and women filled with courage and a sense of duty. I learned to value the people in my life. I saw how people live all over the country. To this day, I hold these experiences as the most educational and formative pieces of my early life. It is a humbling thing to watch the way people do things differently in different places. I believe it made me more curious, open, and inquisitive as an adult. I was raised with a love of country. I grew up learning to love and appreciate the country I was born into. Patriotism pulsed through my veins, and I was taught how to believe in and stand for something bigger than myself. I have a strong sense of community.  Now that I am retired it is time to give back to society.

I can almost always find common ground with strangers, and I like making people feel comfortable in my presence.I’m a natural leader. I am results-oriented, constantly checking in with the goal to determine how close or how far away we are and what it will take to make it happen. I find this pressure inspiring and a great motivator for the rest of the team.I am an excellent communicator. I pride myself on making sure people have the right information because it drives better results.

STEAM-Powered Literacy

When we talk of integrating literacy with STEAM, the first question raised by most, is that we have limited educational resources and whether it is right to invest our limited education resources in teaching critical reading skills or in STEAM. I think we can and must do both. The components of literacy skills—reading, writing, speaking, vocabulary, should all be integrated in STEAM activities. Literacy is one subject that bind all the others together. Many educators wonder whether literacy is part of STEAM because STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Math.  So, what happens to reading and writing? Should we add it as an acronym to STEAM and make it STREAM, with R standing for reading? STEAM is guided by inquiry and is focused on application, creation and evaluation.  I think adding another letter isn’t the point.

Literacy is a part of  every subject—be it maths, arts, music, history, geography or science. It is always there in every content area. Literacy is an action with common components that are embedded into how we consume and share information.  As such, it is naturally a part of STEAM. Reading and writing occurs across the curriculum, including the sciences. Schools today are placing more emphasis on STEAM: Science, Technology, Math, Artsand Engineering in the elementary classroom. There are many ways to integrate literacy and STEAM intentionally in your classroom.

For young learners this could be done by making a day filled with sensory play, exploration and observation, and by adding generous amounts of talking, reading, singing, drawing, or whatever works best for our young learners. A learning experience that integrates multiple subjects when studying a theme helps learners to make strong connections, which in turn strengthens the learning experience for the child. STEAM activities actually provide a fabulous vehicle for integrated learning. To integrate literacy and STEAM for young learners, inquiry-based instruction would be the best way of doing it. The hands-on experiences during activity-based learning will help develop better understanding, enrich vocabulary, critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and reflection. A very important thing for the educator to do is ask high-quality, open-ended questions. With time learners will begin to approach problems in new and authentic ways. STEAM integration helps teachers focus on content (what to learn) and processes (how to learn).

STEAM helps students enhance their critical thinking skills and recognize the intersection of art, science, technology, engineering, and math. It is about applying creative thinking to projects, igniting students’ imagination and creativity through the sciences and arts. Literacy with STEAM definitely contributes to the development of essential skills like collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking. The best thing to incorporate steam into the classroom is to do it gradually without worrying too much about incorporating all five elements of STEAM into an activity- based lesson. What is important is the lessons are creative and foster innovation, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. As you dive into integrated activities, you’ll see that the STEAM fields provide complementary perspectives on the world. They also promote similar processes for learning, such as asking questions, making connections with prior knowledge, gathering and analyzing data (including observations), and communicating findings and ideas.

We can use visual thinking to draw upon the foundation of literacy itself. Visual thinking strategies are a terrific way to introduce concepts to your students and to practice literacy across all content areas. One visual thinking strategy that could be used is to ask learners to look at a piece of text or an image or a process and then ask questions like:- what do you think is going on, what makes you say that, what more can we find? The foundation to visual thinking is in the questions that are asked and in listening to student responses.  These are also the hallmarks of STEAM, so visual thinking and literacy makes sense. Reciprocal Teaching is all about using comprehension strategies to have formal conversations about text.  If the text is a piece of art, or if it’s a scientific finding, the reciprocal teaching strategy will work regardless of content.  Here’s the steps you need: Start by asking students to predict an outcome based on a problem, process, or prompt.  Then, ask some guiding questions and encourage your students to ask each other questions about the work.  Students can then point out elements of the problem, process, or prompt that they don’t understand.  They can then research answers to these questions and summarize their findings.  This strategy is often used to analyze traditional text and is a core component of literacy, but can easily be applied to any content area.

STEAM and Literacy are two sides of the same coin. They supplement and compliment each other when educators plan learning experiences using creative and innovative teaching-learning methods. Definitely literacy and Steam do not have to be on opposite sides of the education fence, but can be well integrated to provide meaningful and engaging learning experiences.  Educators, let us begin to plan our lessons by weaving literacy into every learning experience and thus increase and enhance the benefits of learning. Let us take learning to a new level with our creative mindset.

Vedrana Sarec–awakening joy in creative expression and knowledge in learners

Meet Vedrana Sarec who has elevated pupil’s lives, strengthened communities, inspired a passion for the subjects, and enabled students to attain what they thought was unattainable.

Tell us about yourself…

I am Vedrana Šarec and Im 36 years old. First of all, I am a mother of 4 children and that is what I am most proud of because I live with them alone and raise them and take care of them the best I can. It’s not an easy job at all, but I’ve learned. There have been a lot of falls in my life, but after the fall I would get up and run even harder. then God would send me wonderful people who are then and are my support in everything. These are primarily my parents, and I’m happy to have them. 9 and a half years ago I started working at a vosatinal school in the city where I live, it was my dream when I was a student at that school, and it came true. I graduated from the Faculty of Economics in Osijek, after that the pedagogical group of subjects at the Faculty of Philosophy in Osijek. I passed the professional exam and got a permanent job which I enjoy. now I am in the specialist study of accounting, auditing and analysis where I still have to write only the final paper, I have passed all the exams. I am a professor mentor of economics subject and I have a master’s degree in economics. I am employed at a vocational school in Županja, Croatia. I am the national coordinator of ENO-ENVIRONMENTAL ONLINE and the national coordinator of the MAGICAL INTERCULTURAL FRIEDSHIP NETWORK project. I was the initiator and participant of a project called PIN where my school was the holder of a project in the amount of about one hundred thousand euros I am the author of several projects on e-twinning.

What does success mean to you?

Success is a relative thing. I succeeded if I did the planned activities and commitments of the day because I live only now and I only have the present moment, just this one in which I am writing this. I am happy if I wake up in the morning, if I get another day as a new opportunity. It is true life for me and I live it as such. One person once told me: be simple. And really if you’re like that and that’s how you approach things and things in life, everything goes. But It’s not always all dazzling and great, it wouldn’t be normal if we were always great. Gloomy days come, but they also pass, you just have to endure. Then come the people who are supportive and everything is easy.

Describe yourself as a person….

I am a very emotional person, I love life, I love learning, I am tolerant. I am often hurt by injustice and have been hurt many times, both by my principal and by my husband. But nothing lasts forever. these are all transient things. It’s all an integral part of life. And it’s important to learn to accept everything the way it really is. Sometimes it is not easy to accept ugly or difficult life circumstances, but it can be done with the power of positive thoughts and the support of loved ones.

I am currently in the phase of divorce which is not a small thing for one that is a total of six lives, but I can personally say that I am more happy than sad and disappointed. I feel freedom, peace. I have had a lot of difficulties and disagreements in my marriage and I think it is better to end it than to live just to live and survive. Life is to be lived to the fullest. It is true that it is not easy to find a balance between work and family, but children and their responsibilities come first, then housework and my school work, then everything else.

God sent me a wonderful friend who is a great support to me and I am very grateful for that. I have no big plans because I live now. only short-term plans. But I would like in the future to find a person with whom I will get along and be able to communicate normally and nicely, where we will respect each other just the way we are with all the flaws and virtues.

The year 2020 was especially successful for me because I progressed in the title of professor mentor by achieving 65 points from the required categories, and it was only necessary 20. In 2019, I was awarded for 1 of the 510 most successful educational workers in Croatia.

I gave several lectures at inter-county professional conferences. I was also the leader of the Inter-County Expert Meeting in the field of economics for 2 years. I have written several professional articles. I held several webinars (more than 120 hours) in the Web Classroom Croatia (IT tools) as an example of sharing good practice. I am constantly improving at various educations in Croatia and abroad.

I am a Mentor to students in various competitions (national and international), statistical competition, competition organized by the creative treasury, business challenge.

Areas of interest to me are the goals of sustainable development and I implement them within the school curriculum with students.

I participated with my students in the student year award 2020 in the organization and the student won the title of best, I was a mentor and academic judge. At the symposium of science and technology GTA, where I participate as a mentor to students in the competition, a team leader for Croatia, a host and motivator of my team. I also gave a lecture on Project based on learning.

I was a participant from my school in the project Scholarship implemented by Proni-Center for Social Teaching and Volunteer Center Osijek (from EU funds worth more than 150 000 euros) where I participated in 2 workshops lasting two days, and thus gained certificate for school volunteer coordinator, and I led the school volunteer club for 2 years during the project.

For Science category i was coordinator and award to exellent performance and best coordinator during GTA science and technology symposium 2021 academic judges live session, also Category supervisor (science) in GTA.

Corina Sujdea–Making the most of herself by fanning the tiny inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.

Corine Sujdea’s journey is one of adventure. Each year she encounters new students who become a part of her life. She witnesses their joys and their sorrows. She watches as they learn, grow, and mature, as well as when they falter, make mistakes, and fail. She does her best to support, encourage, and inspire them to succeed. With her words, as well as through her actions, she models for them what is possible and what they can achieve. It is certainly through her skills, knowledge, and expertise, but also through her very presence, that she demonstrates her faith in their abilities. Her journey represents a lifelong commitment to learning, not only about her content area, curricular changes, school policy, and technological innovations, but about true passion for new knowledge and skills that make her more effective as a professional— and a human being. Below is the journey of Corine Sujdea in her own words.

My name is Corina Sujdea and I live in Romania. I am 46 years old, am married and have got 2 kids, a daughter of 20 years old; currently she is a student, second year, in University, and a son, 13.

About 40 years ago, when I was just a child, a dream came true in my mind, that of becoming a teacher. Of course, I learned, I prepared, and when it came time to take classes to become a teacher, my mother stopped me.

This happened not because she didn’t want this career for me, but because school was far from home, which would have meant staying in boarding school. She thought I was too small for that. So I attended an economic high school for 4 years.

After this period, my first thought was that I should be a teacher. So I enrolled in classes, and only then did I tell my mother.

I studied for 3 years away from home and family, but I will never regret it, because this was my dream since childhood, to become a teacher.

I started working as a teacher 24 years ago, when I was just a young woman with big dreams.

The road to success was difficult, not at all easy … but what made me not give up was my passion and love for children. I always thought that when you really want something, and when you fight for your dream, it can become a reality. To be successful means to succeed, through your behavior and attitude, in leading your students on the road to success.

It’s not easy, because there are so many barriers you have to overcome, but at the same time it’s not impossible!

I still may remember, like it was happen yesterday … it was 2014, when God put an angel in my way … in the person of a wonderful lady, mrs. Iuliana Ciubuc, she is one of the best educator from my country. I could say that I have never known such a beautiful person in my life: a person with a wide heart, with generosity, love, kindness…

Mrs. Iuliana opened new ways for me to get to know, she involved me in several national and international projects. So, I started to have more and more contacts from abroad. Although I did not speak English, at that time, I kept in touch with all these international teachers, using Google translate.

After that, in the summer of 2015 I had the chance to know an extraordinary woman who changed my life as well; a special lady with a big heart; a lady whom I fondly call my angel, Ms Isabella Chelariu.

She started to publish several articles about me and my work. Following my appearance on the site, Stories Kingdom World, and several items related to my teaching, I was contacted by more people in the country and abroad via Facebook and email. Each of them wanted a partnership with me, in projects that I was running at that time.

But one day, something unexpected and interesting in the same time happened to me. A teacher from India, Mr. Naveen Gautam, sent me a message asking me to apply for an international award for Most Innovative Teacher of the Year in 2015. Along with this letter was attached a link that led me to the website of international foundations in India called Bharti Global Foundation.  At first, I was very skeptical and I even joked: Me- an international award! Ha Ha! Good joke! But I am a simple teacher! What innovation did me? However, Mr. Naveen insisted, so finally I said “why not?” I did not hurried to submit documents required for registration: a résumé to be attached to documents, a registration form, a photograph ID card and other evidence of my work. But mr. Naveed insisted, telling me that he follow my work for long time, and I have a real chance to be a winner. So I filled in CV, completed application form then I scanned all the necessary documents and I sent with my picture on this foundation email.Any teacher around the world can apply for this award. Everyone who is active in the field of teaching and has been involved in international projects can apply. That is why over 2,000 applications were submitted and their assessment lasted more than two weeks, during which anyone could enter the blog and leave a comment about the candidates. Many friends from home and abroad have posted nice comments about me, something really surprising for me, because I never knew how much appreciated I am.

After the waiting period, I may remember well, because was New Year evening, Mr. Naveen suggested me to go on the site and check the results, even though it was late at night. At first, I thought he was joking and only in the morning they will publish the final results, but the gentleman insisted on opening and watching the results. Of course I started to have emotions; I was so worried, stressed… I felt unable to open the site. Finally, I arrived at the list of winners and….. I had the biggest surprise of my life: I was one of those who received the award!!! I thought I was dreaming, that nothing is true, but my name and picture were there with 5 other teachers in the world. I cannot say how honored I felt to receive this award! I just feel that the whole endeavor was rewarded my work and that everything I did was worth the effort. I will never forget how those 3 people changed my life! That is why I consider them my angels.

I would like to thank those who believed in me and encouraged me, my guardian angels, as I like to call Ms. Professor Iuliana Ciubuc – the one who initiated me in developing international projects, Ms. Isabelle Chelariu – the one who made me a well-known teacher in my country and abroad through the articles she published on her website and not least Mr Naveen Gautam – the one who believe in me and who encouraged me to apply for this prestigious award.

About me I could say that I am a normal person, neither better nor worse than others. I am optimistic and positive; I have always seen what is best in those around me. If I am asked for help, I will always offer it, if that is in my power. I like to motivate and encourage those around me.

Of course, in the 24 years of my career there have been many challenges, but with trust in God, with work and perseverance, I managed to get over everything well.

I have worked on a number of International projects (ISA), as a partner, Coordinator or partner in many eTwinning projects since 2009, also I am Erasmus + coordinator of 3 projects  in European countries and Turkey. I got funds from EU, and this gave me the chance to take my students abroad, in various mobilities, in different countries, across the Europe.

I am Country Director of International Youth Society(IYS), a Country Director of WVI, a comitee member of Educlouds UK and Country Director of Eco Training Center SweedenETC), a co-founder of World Wide Green Project and a founder of International Cultural Passport project.

I got Global Award for Innovation in Education in 2015 and Best Teacher Award in January, 2021.

I am Country Director of International Youth Society(IYS), a Country Director of WVI, a comitee member of Educlouds UK and Country Director of Eco Training Center SweedenETC), a co-founder of World Wide Green Project and a founder of International Cultural Passport project.

I was a keynote speaker in many international Conferences, and also an atendee in many webinars, workshoops and trainings.

Recently I became an activist of Human Rights and a Peace Ambassador for Romania. I am the writer of two books and a number of papers as well.

Of course, all this does not endanger my family life, because I sought to have a balance between career and family. That’s why, until I was 40, I was primarily concerned with the family, the education of my children. After 40, when my children became much more independent, I began to turn my attention to my career. On weekends I spend time with family, and during the week with work. Of course, the two intertwine, but I always try to have certain priorities, which I respect as much as possible. I thank God for the family I have, because they support me in everything I do, just as I support them.

In the future, I want, first of all, to see the success of my children, to help them fulfill their dreams. Then, I want to see my parents healthy, because everything I am today is due to them and the education they gave me.

After that, I want my students to remember me with pleasure, and everything I taught them to be a cornerstone in their career building.

I am a well-known teacher on all continents of the world, due to my involvement in numerous international educational projects, both scientific and social, artistic, cultural, voluntary, charitable, covering almost all areas in the last 24 years.

I worked, out of love for children around the world, to facilitate the understanding of science, social lives, planting in the souls of children everywhere friendship, love for nature, the environment in general, the desire for peace for all children of the world regardless of gender, religion , color, volunteering, etc.

When, where, why and how did you begin your journey? Were there any obstacles you faced? How did you overcome them? Can you recall any striking incident that left a deep mark or changed the course of your life?

I was born in rural area and brought up in small town, Wai (Satara), Maharastra. Basically, I am a Science (Physics) graduate. After my graduation I was searching job and time being I accepted job as a teacher in private school. In 1992, one of my childhood friend’s (who was a special child) sister suggested me to join special education course. Before joining Special Education course, I was little hesitated since I had no background or idea about special children. One week I observed children with special needs in special school and that time I realized that this field is unique and challenging and ignored by society and very few professionals take interest in this field. I observed children and their parents who were struggling to live a life. That emotions brought me in this field. That time, most of my friends discouraged and demotivated me and laughed at me since being a science graduate I joined this field. That time, I was totally confused. I strongly remember that one my friend discouraged me and said that you will not have a future and said that, in regular school education students remembers their teachers, but in this field, who will remember you? I was unanswered and quite upset at that time. Since from that time, I decided to do something new which will be beneficial for the special children and the society…..no matter who remember me. After joining in this field, I was motivated and interested to work hard and creative way. I worked in Maharashtra, Gujrat, and Goa states. While working, I completed my post-graduation in Sociology, Foundation course in Learning Disabilities and B. Ed in special Education. Since last 28 years I am working happily in this field.

What is it about your work that makes you want to get up every morning? What motivates you to work?

I look forward that whatever I have, will be useful to transform and change somebody’s life and this gives me satisfaction and energy to work hard. I feel that we should not live for ourselves but for others also. Each day we should learn new things from others and teach them something new. I feel proud and motivated, when I teach something to children, and children performs it, be independent, confidence, and happy. Even I feel happy to see expressions and satisfaction on faces of parents of special children which motivates me to work hard and consistently.

What part of your occupation do you personally find most satisfying and most challenging? What do you like and not like about working in this industry?

While working with children with Special needs, I learnt many things. I got knowledge of various subjects related to Special Education. I feel satisfied to teach skills which are directly useful to child for independent living and employability. Sometimes when I teach, and child is unable to learn, then it is challenging to me. I try to go child’s level and find out various teaching strategies to understand concepts. It is challenging but if we do with devotion, constant efforts and with proper techniques, we will get sure success. In this field we get knowledge of various fields like education, psychology, sociology, medical, therapeutics, art, craft, dance, drama, yoga, sports, etc. Our creativity comes out in various ways. This field have many problems, difficulties and challenges, and we must fight and get success. Some people come in this field for the name and fame, which I don’t like.

What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your profile alone?

It was not my passion to be a teacher, but I believe that God has specially chosen me as a Special Educator. My mind continuously thinks about various creative and innovative ideas. I always like to help others.

What skills are the most crucial to succeeding in this career? What type of person do you need to be?

Hard work with patience, teamwork with good partnership, hunger and passion to learn new skills, enjoying work, being optimistic and giving best outputs are most important skills for succeeding in this career. According to me we should use 3H formula in our field – Head, Heart & Hands. While growing ourselves we should drop our ego. I want to be the better version of myself as a Special Educator.

What are some things outside of work that you’re irrationally passionate about?

I am irrationally passionate about Cosmic Energy.  I believe in Occult Science, Numerology and Graphology. I love cooking and doing experiments while cooking. I also love music and art-craft activities.

What is the secret of your success? And what does success mean to you? Do you think we need role models? Do you have one?

There in no secret of my success. As a regular routine, I worked hard and took knowledge in various areas and used it in my career of teaching. I always think to do something new and different. Hard work, creativity and innovative ideas brings us near success. Yes, we need role model and vision in our work that gives us motivation. My mentor Late Mr. Narendra Padte and my teacher Late Dr. Ashutosh Pandit are my role models in this field.

From your perspective, what are the problems you see working in this field? What was the biggest challenge you were facing?

Availability of Resources, Inclusive Education and Employment Opportunities for the persons with disabilities are main problems in this field. According to me, taking care & rehabilitation of destitute children/ persons with disabilities is the biggest challenge.

Moving forward, do you have any special words of encouragement for our readers as result of your experience?

Making difference in someone’s life should be our prime goal.

We are here for a particular purpose. I believe that, we are chosen by God to do this work. Make a positive change where you work. Patience, dedication in work and commitment will take you a long way.

We should never stop learning, learn from failure and learn to share knowledge & experience. Always use our strengths for better performance. Without hard work it is impossible to achieve our goals.

On the last note, would you like to give us an insight on your future plans.

My future plan is to start center for independent living and employment opportunities for the persons with Intellectual Disabilities to make them fully independent and be a part of our society.Another plan is to make use of technology in the field of Special Education and rehabilitation.
